Cisco Catalyst 3850 Switches - Refurbished, Used and New

The Cisco Catalyst 3850 is a stackable Layer 3 access switch family in 1U, with 24 and 48 port gigabit, multigigabit, SFP and SFP+ models. It offers PoE+ and UPOE, StackWise-480 stacking at 480 Gbps, and an integrated wireless controller that supports up to 100 access points and 2,000 wireless clients per switch or stack. NetworkTigers carries the 3850 refurbished, used and new, and every unit is tested before it ships so it works when it arrives. These units suit replacement and expansion of existing 3850 networks.

Reading 3850 part numbers

  • T, P, F, U: T is data only. P is PoE+ at up to 30W per port. F is a 48-port PoE+ model with the larger 1100W supply. U is UPOE at up to 60W per port.
  • XU and 12X48U: multigigabit ports with UPOE. The 24XU has 24 of them and the 12X48U has 12.
  • S and XS inside the model: SFP and SFP+ fiber ports. In WS-C3850-24S-S the first S means SFP ports and the last -S is the feature set.
  • -L, -S, -E at the end: the feature set on the unit. Cisco's notices define L as LAN Base, S as IP Base and E as IP Services.

Which Catalyst 3850 do I need?

  • PoE: choose a data-only T model for desks and servers, a P or F model for phones and access points, and a U model when a device needs up to 60W per port.
  • Wi-Fi access points above 1G: the 24XU and 12X48U have multigigabit ports that run 2.5G and 5G over Cat5e and Cat6 cable.
  • Fiber: the S and XS models are for fiber aggregation and for connecting access switches over fiber.
  • Feature set: -L has limited static routing. -S adds IP Base routing with static routes, RIP, EIGRP stub and OSPF for routed access. -E adds the full OSPF, EIGRP, BGP and IS-IS routing set, VRF-Lite and PIM. Choose the version you need on the unit.
  • Stacking: StackWise-480 joins up to nine switches. StackPower pools the power supplies of up to four switches. The 48XS does neither.

What's included

Each switch listing's What's Included section names the power supplies and fans that ship with it. Uplink modules, optics and cables are sold separately.

FAQ

How many power supplies do I need for PoE+ on every port?
On a 24-port PoE switch, one 1100W or two 715W. On a 48-port PoE switch, two 1100W or one 1100W and one 715W. For UPOE on every port, a 24-port switch needs one 1100W and one 715W, and a 48-port switch needs two 1100W.

Can I mix AC and DC power supplies?
Yes. The two slots take two AC modules, two DC modules, or one of each.

Does the 48XS take an uplink module or stack?
No. Cisco's data sheet says the 48-port SFP+ model does not support StackWise, StackPower or uplink modules.

What came after the 3850?
The Catalyst 9300, which NetworkTigers carries in the Catalyst 9300 collection. The Catalyst 3650 collection covers its smaller sibling.

NetworkTigers has supplied tested network equipment since 1996, and every unit carries a 365-day warranty. Ask us for a quote.
