Managed or externally managed?

The QM8700, SB7700 and SB7800 are managed switches with their own onboard management and subnet manager. The QM8790, SB7790 and SB7890 are externally managed versions of the same hardware: they cost less, but they need a subnet manager running elsewhere in the fabric, such as on a server or a managed switch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the QM8700 and QM8790?
Same 40-port HDR hardware. The QM8700 is managed and runs its own subnet manager; the QM8790 is externally managed and relies on a subnet manager elsewhere in the fabric.
