Reading N3000 model numbers

• N3024 and N3048: the series and the port count. The N3024 has 24 access ports and the N3048 has 48.
• T: copper RJ45 access ports with no PoE, as in the N3024ET-ON. The original N3024 and N3048 have no letter and are also copper without PoE.
• P: PoE+ at up to 30.8W per port, with some ports capable of 60W, as in the N3048P and N3024EP-ON.
• F: SFP fiber access ports in place of copper, as in the N3024EF-ON.
• E: the later N3000E hardware, a newer version of the same switch. The N3000E has more switching capacity (328 Gbps against 212 Gbps on the earlier N3024) and stacks up to 12 high.
• -ON: Open Networking support.
• N3132PX-ON: the 32 is the number of access ports, 24 gigabit and 8 multigigabit. P is PoE and X marks the 2.5G/5G ports.

Which version do I need?

• Port type: the T and ET-ON models are copper without PoE, the F and EF-ON models are SFP fiber, and the P and EP-ON models power phones, access points and cameras.
• PoE: choose a P or EP-ON model for PoE+. The 24-port models have 12 ports at 60W and the 48-port models have 12. Choose the N3132PX-ON when access points need 2.5G or 5G, since all 32 of its ports are PoE 60W.
• N3000 or N3000E-ON: the ET-ON, EF-ON and EP-ON are the newer hardware of the same model, with more switching capacity and larger stacks. Choose them for a new deployment. Choose the original N3000 when you're adding to an existing N3000 stack.
• Power supply: non-PoE models use 200W supplies. The 24-port PoE models ship with 715W and take 1,100W as well. The 48-port PoE models and the N3132PX-ON use 1,100W.

FAQ

What is the difference between the N3000 and the N3000E-ON?
They are the same switch family. The N3000E-ON models (ET-ON, EF-ON, EP-ON) are the later hardware, with Open Networking support, 328 Gbps of switching capacity and stacks of up to 12 switches.

How many switches can I stack?
The N3000E-ON models and the N3132PX-ON stack up to 12 high. The original N3000 models stack up to 8 on current software. If you mix N3000 and N3000E switches, the stack is limited to 8 and 1,024 active VLANs. Each switch has two rear stacking ports, and the N3000 only stacks with other N3000-series switches.

Do the switches stack out of the box?
The 24- and 48-port models have two rear stacking ports and use Dell N-series stacking cables. The N3132PX-ON needs its optional stacking module.

How much power does PoE give each port?
PoE+ ports give up to 30.8W. The PoE 60W ports give up to 60W for devices such as multi-radio access points. The total budget depends on the power supply fitted, and a second power supply adds PoE power as well as redundancy.

Can I add a second power supply?
Yes. Every model has two hot-swappable power supply bays, and a second supply adds redundancy.

What does the rear expansion bay take?
The 24- and 48-port models have one bay for a two-port 10G module, SFP+ or 10GBASE-T, which adds two more 10G ports.

Are optics included?
No. SFP and SFP+ optics are sold separately.
