When you need one

An injector is the answer in three situations: the switch feeding the access point does not supply PoE at all, every PoE port on an existing switch is already allocated, or you are adding a single access point at a site and replacing the switch to get one powered port makes no sense. The injector sits inline between the switch port and the access point, draws AC power locally, and passes power and data onward.

Match the standard, not just the connector

Nearly every SonicWall access point needs 802.3at, not 802.3af. This is the detail that causes trouble. An access point fed from an 802.3af injector will usually power on and appear to work, then drop radios or reboot under client load. That failure pattern looks like a wireless problem, a firmware problem or a coverage problem, and people chase it for a long time before checking the injector. If you are specifying new, specify PoE+.

Check the cable run as well. Power over Ethernet is rated to 100 meters like data, but voltage drop over a long run with thin or low-grade cable eats into the budget at the far end. If a marginal access point sits at the end of a long run, the injector is the first thing to rule out and the cable is the second.
