How to pick the right one

Generation matters more than model number. The Gen 7 desktop appliances use a different adapter from the Gen 6 ones, so a TZ470 and a TZ400 do not share a power supply despite looking similar on the desk. The single most common ordering mistake is assuming a Gen 6 adapter will serve a Gen 7 unit.

Desktop and rack appliances are not the same problem. TZ and SOHO units take an external brick. Rack-mounted NSA and NSa appliances use internal power supply modules, which are field replaceable on most models and hot-swappable on chassis built for redundant power. If you are running a critical site on a model that accepts two supplies, fitting the second one is cheap insurance.

The wattage is not interchangeable even at the same voltage. A 36W adapter will not reliably run an appliance specified for a higher draw, particularly one with PoE ports feeding an access point. The symptom is usually not a dead unit but an intermittent one, which costs far more to diagnose than the correct adapter costs to buy.

Keeping a spare adapter on the shelf turns a dead firewall into a five-minute fix rather than an RMA and a wait. If you are not certain which part you need, the part number is printed on the label of the original adapter and on the appliance's own label.
