The Cisco FAN-T1 is the Type 1 fan module for the Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series. Each 3850 switch uses three of these field-replaceable fan modules, which install at the rear of the chassis and cool the switch. Cisco also lists this module as C3850-FAN-T1.
Cisco designs the three fans to provide redundancy, so the switch can keep running while a failed fan is replaced. A failed fan should still be replaced promptly so the switch stays at its full cooling capacity. A spare fan module is a sensible part to keep on hand for any closet with several 3850 switches, and it is a common replacement when a used switch arrives with a noisy or failed fan. The switch reports the status of each fan module individually, so a failed unit is easy to identify before it is swapped. The same fan module is also used in the Catalyst 3650 Series.
For a host switch, the Cisco WS-C3850-48P-S 48-port PoE+ switch and the Cisco WS-C3850-48T-S 48-port Gigabit switch both use this fan module. The Catalyst 3850 48XS uses a different fan; for the front-to-back version of that model, the Cisco FAN-T3-R front-to-back airflow fan module is the one to order.
