Cisco Meraki MA-QSFP-40G-SR-BD 40GB BASE-SR-BiDi 850nm BiDi MMF QSFP Transceiver

The Cisco Meraki MA-QSFP-40G-SR-BD is a 40 Gigabit short-reach BiDi QSFP+ optic. It uses two wavelengths in the 832 to 918nm range so that 40 Gigabit runs over one duplex pair of multimode fiber with a standard duplex LC connector, instead of the 8-fiber MPO cabling an SR4 optic needs.

Reach is 30 meters on OM2, 100 meters on OM3, and 150 meters on OM4 multimode fiber. Meraki lists it for the MS355, MS390, MS425, and MS450 switches; the MS390 needs a 40 Gigabit uplink module installed first. On OM3 fiber, 100 meters covers most closet-to-core runs inside a single building.

The main reason to choose BiDi is cabling. A building already wired with duplex LC multimode for 10 Gigabit can move those links to 40 Gigabit by changing the optics at both ends, without pulling MPO trunks. Both ends of a link must use matching 40 Gigabit BiDi optics; they do not link to SR4 optics.
